Sending one message to your whole contact list feels efficient. In practice it is usually the most expensive way to market. You pay to reach people the message doesn't fit, and each irrelevant message makes them a little more likely to opt out.
Segmentation fixes that. Splitting your audience into groups with something in common lets you send fewer, better messages that people are glad to receive.
What is a segment?
A segment is a group of contacts who share one or more characteristics. It might be static, such as "attendees of our March workshop", or dynamic, such as "customers who bought in the last 30 days", where people join and leave automatically as their data changes.
Start with the data you already have
You don't need a data science team to segment well. Most businesses already hold useful information:
- Location: city, province or branch.
- Customer status: prospect, new customer, regular, lapsed.
- Purchase history: what they bought, how often and how recently.
- Product interest: which services they asked about or signed up for.
- Channel preference: SMS, WhatsApp, email, or all three.
- Engagement: who clicked, replied or opened recently, and who hasn't in months.
Five segments worth building first
- New contacts (last 30 days). Welcome them, explain what to expect and point them to their first useful action.
- Active customers. Reward them with early access, loyalty offers or useful tips, not just more promotions.
- Lapsed customers. Contacts who haven't bought or engaged in a set period. A well-timed "we miss you" with a real incentive can bring many back.
- By location. Branch openings, local events and region-specific offers only make sense to people nearby.
- By product interest. Someone who asked about funeral cover should not be getting car insurance promotions.
Write for the segment
Segmentation only pays off if the message changes. For each segment, ask:
- What does this group already know about us?
- What would be genuinely useful to them right now?
- What is the one action we want them to take?
A message written for a specific group almost always outperforms a generic one, even when the offer is the same.
Keep your segments healthy
Segments are only as good as the data behind them. Build habits that keep it clean:
- standardise phone numbers and remove duplicates when you import;
- update customer status as people buy, lapse or opt out;
- use consistent field names and values ("Lusaka", not "lsk", "LUSAKA" and "Lusaka City");
- review your segments every quarter and retire ones you no longer use.
Measure by segment
Compare results across segments, not just across campaigns. You may find that one group responds strongly to WhatsApp while another prefers SMS, or that lapsed customers only react to a specific kind of offer. Those insights shape your next campaign.
Segmentation in BalloAds
In BalloAds you can import contacts with custom fields, group them into audiences by any attribute, and search and filter your list to build a segment in seconds. Every campaign report breaks results down so you can see which audiences responded, and which need a different approach next time.
