"10,000 messages sent" sounds like a result, but it isn't one. What matters is how many reached a phone, how many people acted, and what you learned for next time.
Here is how to read your campaign results, and which numbers deserve your attention.
Sent, delivered and failed
Every message passes through a few stages:
- Submitted: your platform handed the message to the network.
- Delivered: the network confirmed it reached the handset.
- Failed or expired: it could not be delivered.
The network's confirmation is called a delivery receipt. Without delivery receipts you only know what you sent, not what arrived. Always judge a campaign on delivered messages, not submitted ones.
Reading failure reasons
Failures are not all the same, and each type calls for a different response:
- Invalid or unknown number: the number doesn't exist or is badly formatted. Clean your list, and check that numbers have the right number of digits and a valid network prefix.
- Phone switched off or out of coverage: the network may keep retrying for a while. If the phone stays unreachable, the message expires. This usually isn't your fault, but it matters for time-sensitive sends.
- Rejected by the network: often a sender ID or content problem. Check that your sender ID is approved for that network.
- Opted out or blocked: respect it, and remove the contact from marketing sends.
A sudden rise in one failure type is a useful early warning.
Track the action, not just the delivery
Delivery tells you the message arrived. Engagement tells you it worked.
- Link clicks: put full links that start with
https://in your messages so they can be tracked. A bare domain likeexample.commay not be clickable on every phone, and it can't be measured. - Replies: for two-way campaigns, count responses and how quickly they arrive.
- Read receipts: on WhatsApp, read status shows who actually saw your message.
- Opens and clicks: for email, these show which subject lines and content work.
Connect messages to outcomes
The best measure is the business result: payments received after a reminder, bookings after an invitation, or sales during a promotion. Where you can, compare a period or group that received the message with one that didn't, so you can see the difference the message made.
Build a habit of learning
After every campaign, write down three things: what you expected, what happened, and what you'll change. Over a few months these notes become your own playbook for which messages, timings and segments work best for your customers.
Reporting in BalloAds
BalloAds shows delivery in real time for every campaign: how many messages were delivered, which failed and why, and which contacts were skipped before sending because their numbers were invalid. Link tracking, read status and email engagement appear alongside delivery in the same report, so you can see the whole picture in one place.
